toxic positivity: what it sounds like.
toxic positivity is the pressure to stay upbeat no matter what — even when it means denying what's actually true. it's not the same as hope. hope makes room for the hard thing. toxic positivity uses a smile to shut it down.
most of the time it comes from a good place. people reach for it because pain makes them uncomfortable and they want the discomfort to stop. but the effect is that the person hurting learns to hide it. here are the ones you've almost certainly heard:
- "good vibes only."
- "it could be worse — others have it so much harder."
- "everything happens for a reason."
- "just choose happiness / just think positive."
- "don't be so negative."
- "it is what it is — stay positive!"
why they sting: they're not the opposite of sadness, they're the silencing of it. they quietly tell someone that the honest version of how they feel isn't welcome — so they perform "fine" instead, and carry the real thing alone. over time, "good vibes only" becomes "your bad days aren't allowed here."
the alternative isn't negativity. it's honesty with room in it. you can hold hope and the hard thing at the same time. try:
- "that's a lot to carry. i'm glad you told me."
- "it makes sense you feel that way."
- "you don't have to look on the bright side right now."
- "i'm not going anywhere."
the difference in one line: real positivity makes space for how you actually feel. toxic positivity replaces it. being not okay isn't a bad vibe to clear out of the room. it's just the truth, and it's allowed here.
